For the last 48 hours it has been raining. Everywhere water is running. The track from the back door to the woodshed is a quagmire. The creek has broken its banks and come out over the flat below the garden. The dogs are thick with mud. The rain, destructive for the oyster farmers on our boundaries, inconvenient for many, assures us of huge spring.
Where would we be without bees? Have flowers growing in my vege patch as our neighbours have bees and we buy their honey. As a devoted fan of Charmian Clift - have you read Suzanne Chick’s ‘Searching for Charmian?
I wish I’d written ‘bees on the hill dancing their maps’ ...such a heart-filling vision. After a completely horrid week and a major fork in the road moment, it’s perfect timing; thank you...
Oh it’s wet here too… feeding cows and checking sheep has me skidding everywhere. We need to plants onions and potatoes very soon - let’s hope it all calms a bit. I just got an email that my subscription with TSS has been renewed. Glorious! Yes I’m in for another year of your words. Thank you Maggie x
I am reading this as the rain falls heavily outside, Maggie and it only added to this wonderful story of yours. I have been delighting in seeing the bees hover over the early spring blooms here, they really are such fascinating creatures.
Wonderful Wendell Berry article: I love his sword-pen slashing through complacency, his prescience about environmental degradation etc. I love even more that he knew bell hooks. Ah... bell hooks is a stunning read, more prescience, deep intelligence, and her passing a massive loss. Hooray to Kentucky who birthed them both (who would have thought!).
I too, just received an email that my subscription to your glorious The Sit Spot, has been renewed!
I look forward each week to reading and enjoying your beautiful words woven into your stories.
Bees are one of my favourite things and this weeks story is so lovely.
